Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A centre table is a freestanding piece of furniture designed to stand in the middle of an entrance hall, foyer, or grand drawing room. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these circular or octagonal tables often feature tilt-top mechanisms to allow space-saving placement when not in active use.

Cabinetmakers typically utilised fine hardwoods such as burr oak, mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often applied as highly figured veneers over solid oak or pine carcases. Construction methods included hand-cut joinery, segmented starburst veneering, inlaid crossbanding, and heavy castors attached beneath carved pedestal bases.

Authentic period pieces feature period-correct construction markers such as original brass tilt-latch mechanisms, hand-carved pedestal details, and natural timber oxidisation on the underside. Look for hand-planed surfaces, subtle irregularities in construction, and matched grain arrangements in segmented or quartered veneers.

Position the table centrally in an entrance hall or open living space to create an architectural focal point beneath a central light fixture. The rich timber tones can be balanced against neutral walls, clean-lined modern seating, and understated decorative ceramics to create an eclectic interior scheme.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to protect the finish. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement, lifting of veneers, or uneven colour fading.
