Antique Exhibition Quality Irish Killarney Marquetry Inlaid Yew Wood Centre Table Large Round Entry Hall Table Attributed to the Egan Workshop

19th century
Description

An exceptional and large Irish Killarney marquetry inlaid centre table in beautifully figured yew wood, a striking exhibition quality piece designed as a statement table for an entry hall, foyer or formal interior. Richly decorated with shamrocks, harps and flowing foliage, this is a fine example of Killarney craftsmanship very much in the manner of the renowned Egan workshop.

The circular top is particularly impressive, displaying a superb radial yew ground with a finely shaped serpentine edge. It is intricately inlaid with traditional Irish motifs, framed by double crossbanding, with a central leaf design creating a strong focal point. The depth of colour and contrast in the timber is excellent and enhances the clarity and detail of the marquetry.

The table is raised on a substantial hexagonal pedestal, finely inlaid with harps and shamrocks, leading to a wide circular platform base with further inlay. It stands on three well carved scroll feet and has excellent scale, balance and presence, making it a true centrepiece.

Killarney furniture was produced as high quality decorative work for important interiors rather than everyday use. These pieces were made to impress, often purchased by wealthy visitors and collectors as symbols of Irish craftsmanship and heritage. Larger examples such as this were produced in smaller numbers and are considerably harder to find today.

While unlabelled, the quality, design and use of traditional motifs strongly suggest a connection to the Egan workshop or a closely related maker. The scale and richness of inlay place this among the finer surviving examples of Killarney furniture. Comparable pieces are held in private collections and are rarely offered on the open market.

Also referred to as a centre table or foyer table, this form is highly sought after for interior design projects. Ideal as a centre table in a grand entry hall or as a focal point in a formal room.

Condition report

Very good antique condition with a rich colour and patina. There are very minor age related marks to the top as expected. The structure is solid and the table presents extremely well.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Killarney ware refers to 19th-century decorative woodwork crafted in County Kerry, Ireland, typically utilising native yew and arbutus wood. These pieces feature elaborate marquetry depicting Irish foliage, landmarks, and traditional motifs such as shamrocks, ferns, and harp emblems.

Killarney furniture predominantly features native yew and arbutus wood veneers laid over robust pine or oak frames. Construction typically includes hand-cut marquetry inlay work, scalloped borders, tilt-top mechanisms, and heavy carved pedestal bases.

Authentic pieces display distinct native botanical motifs like shamrocks, ferns, and oak leaves, or inlaid views of local Kerry landmarks. Examination of the timber reveals natural tone variations in yew and arbutus, alongside hand-worked marquetry seams and period-correct joinery on the underside.

Position the table as a central focal point in an entrance hall, foyer, or large reception room to highlight its circular form and intricate top. Pair it with understated architectural lighting and neutral flooring to allow the wood inlay to remain the focal feature.

Dust gently using a dry, soft cloth and apply clear beeswax sparingly along the wood grain to nourish the timber. Position the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme atmospheric changes to prevent veneer movement or lifting.
