Rare Edwardian Solid / Sterling Silver Travelling Medical Kit - 1903

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A fabulous and rare find. This medical travel set is made from solid English silver and made by the top notch London silversmith / luxury retailer, Drew & Sons of Piccadilly Circus.

The set looks to never have been used with the interior retaining it's pristine lavishly gilded finish.

The top is removed and in turn separates in two to reveal a double compartment pill box, finished in gold and hallmarked. Inside the canister an inverted funnel is revealed inside a glass medicine glass with measurements engraved on the side.

All pieces of silver are hallmarked for London 1903, an Edwardian example, together with the makers mark for Drew & Sons (Samuel Summers Drew & Ernest Drew). The underside of the outer canister is also signed by the retailer.

A superb, highly collectable piece of English silver measuring 2" in diameter x 2 3/4" tall and weighing 161.5 Grams / 5.19 Troy Ounces including glass. Excellent condition.

Drew and Sons began trading in 1844, as proudly noted on their letterhead. Like many firms of the nineteenth century who catered to the needs of the travelling gentleman, they started out supplying luggage and travel requisites before expanding into portable furniture as demand grew.

They became especially well known for their fine quality leather goods and luxurious picnic sets, but their range extended far beyond that. The entire second floor of their Piccadilly Circus showroom was dedicated to military furniture and campaign equipment, and they made a point of stating on their documents that everything they sold was made in house and to the highest standard. The pieces we have seen over the years certainly live up to that claim. Drew and Sons enjoyed the patronage of Queen Victoria and the Royal Family, as well as many of the royal courts across Europe.

Their main address was 33 to 37 Piccadilly Circus, though they also had premises at 155 Leadenhall Street in London and 42 Kings Road in Brighton. Their workshops were based in Burlington Buildings on Heddon Street and in Hatton Garden.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Edwardian era, compact travelling medical kits were constructed for personal healthcare during journeys, typically housing graduated glass measures, silver covers, and protective cases.

High-grade travelling sets commonly combined hallmarked sterling silver, vermeil interior gilding to prevent corrosion, and acid-etched lead glass for precise liquid measurement.

Authentic British pieces display official hallmark stamps, including a lion passant for silver purity, an assay office symbol, a specific date letter, and a makers mark.

Small silver medical collectibles serve as intriguing historical accents when curated on a tray within a bookshelf, vanity counter, or office desk set-up.

Clean external silver surfaces with a soft cloth and specialized silver polish, taking care to avoid abrasive cleaning agents on interior vermeil gilding.
