Dating to the end of the 18th century, this striking French pastoral tapestry is a fabulous decorative option in the right space. Dating to the end of the 18th century, this striking French pastoral tapestry is a fabulous decorative option in the right space. Following the designs of the French painter and engraver Jean-Baptiste Huet, it depicts a idyllic harvest or festival scene with musicians, dancing couples and a festive meal. It is a joyful scene which is filled with myriad charming details. The inn and landscape to the rear are equally well drawn and present a perfect backdrop to the festive scene. Huet was influenced by the roccoco movement, and artists like Francois Boucher. The scene is also reminiscent of earlier tapestries which followed the works of David Teniers. The format of our tapestry is exceptional, unusually wide with a low height which allows for a generous interpretation of the design, but also makes it ideal for both country and urban homes.  This piece has survived in very good condition with minimal repairs and in its original size. The silk in the light arras has also survived remarkably well.
