Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Balloon back chairs are a mid-19th-century design characterised by a rounded, open backrest shaped like a hot-air balloon. Popularised during the Victorian era, the style features a continuous curved frame that often incorporates delicate carved crest details and sweeping side uprights.

These chairs were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as solid mahogany, walnut, or rosewood. Seats were typically stuffed with natural horsehair and upholstered in silk, damask, or wool fabrics over wooden seat frames.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, natural timber grain variations, and evidence of hand-carved detailing on the crest rail or frame. Front legs are usually hand-turned or cabriole, while rear legs feature a subtle outward splay.

Pairing Victorian chairs with a clean-lined modern dining table creates an engaging contemporary contrast. They also function well as standalone accent seating in bedrooms, hallways, or beside a writing desk.

Timber surfaces should be dusted with a soft microfibre cloth and periodically treated with beeswax polish to protect the finish. Upholstered seats require gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment and immediate spot-cleaning for spills.
