Rare Bow Porcelain Fluted Sauce Boat Mandarin Chinese Figures Pattern C.1765

Description

A lovely small Bow porcelain sauceboat, of fluted shape, painted in famille rose enamels with charming scenes of two children dancing outside in the garden. A feathered pink border runs inside the rim and there is a small floral sprig inside the base. Unmarked, c.1765.

It measures 10.8cm (4 1/4") long, 6cm (2 3/8") wide and 5cm (2") high. 

Condition is excellent: one small nick to the side of the spout and light fridging to the glaze on the lip and to the tops of some of the scallops along the rim and some associated discolouration to the porcelain in these spots. Some further light discolouration to the spout, and also to the foot rim, which have been carefully examined and there is no repair or restoration to the piece. There is a fine firing hairline around the lower handle terminal and only minor handling wear to the enamels.

Produced in Stratford-le-Bow, London, Bow porcelain was famous for pioneering soft-paste porcelain incorporating bone ash to rival imported Chinese export wares during the mid-to-late eighteenth century.

These vessels were press-moulded or cast from soft-paste porcelain, glazed and fired, before receiving detailed hand-painted overglaze enamel decoration and gilded highlights.

Authentic Bow porcelain frequently exhibits a warm creamy translucency, slight blue-green glaze pooling around handles or rims, and hand-painted Chinoiserie or Mandarin motifs.

It can be displayed inside a glazed dresser, curated on a sideboard top alongside period metalware, or placed on a open shelf as a decorative accent.

Wash gently by hand in lukewarm water using a mild soap, avoiding abrasive pads, chemical cleaners, or prolonged soaking to preserve delicate overglaze enamels.
