Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A standard lamp is a tall, free-standing floor lamp designed to hold a light fitting at elevated height. Popularised during the early twentieth century in Britain, these pieces often feature detailed timber turning and classical tripod bases inspired by earlier eighteenth-century designs.

Standard lamps from this era were primarily constructed from solid timbers such as walnut, mahogany, and oak. Accent details frequently incorporated hand-carved motifs, parcel gilding, and turned central columns supported by weighted tripod bases for stability.

Authentic period examples display signs of historical craftsmanship, including hand-carved detailing, natural timber grain variation, and soft wear to original gilt or polished finishes. They may also show evidence of historical electrical conversion from original oil or gas fittings.

Place the lamp beside a reading armchair, sofa, or within an unlit corner to provide targeted accent illumination. The warm wood tones and classical silhouette pair effectively with both heritage soft furnishings and neutral contemporary upholstery.

Dust the timber shaft regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly to un-gilded wood to maintain hydration, ensuring gilt areas are avoided, as moisture or abrasive cleaners can lift delicate gold leafing.
