Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A porringer is a small, shallow vessel with one or two handles, historically used throughout Western Europe from the seventeenth century onwards for consuming porridge, broths, and medicinal warm drinks such as caudle or posset. Crafted in sterling silver, these items served both practical dining functions and as status symbols presented for births or weddings.

Porringers are primarily constructed from sterling silver or pewter using hand-hammering and raising techniques from flat metal sheets. Decorative elements often feature cast scroll handles, hand-chased relief work, or cut-card leaf applique soldered onto the lower body and lid.

Authenticity is verified by checking British assay hallmarks stamped on the body and lid, which include the makers mark, town mark, standard mark, and date letter. Authentic seventeenth- and eighteenth-century examples exhibit characteristic hand-hammering marks, visible solder joins around the handles, and genuine period wear along the base rim.

A silver porringer can be displayed as a central accent on a dining table sideboard, styled on a library shelf alongside leather-bound volumes, or placed on a hall console table to hold small personal items. Combining tarnished or polished silver accents with natural timber surfaces adds texture to contemporary spaces.

Clean silver vessels using a soft cotton cloth and a specialised, non-abrasive silver polish formulated to remove oxidisation without stripping delicate surface detail. Store pieces in anti-tarnish cloth bags when not on display and avoid wash cycles in dishwashers or exposure to harsh household chemicals.
