Letu & Mauger Paris Pair of Large Romantic Biscuit Porcelain Figures C.1860s

A monumental pair of French porcelain figures produced by Letu & Mauger of Paris around the 1860s, representing the firm’s more ambitious large-scale decorative output. Standing approximately 40 cm high and weighing over 2 kg each, they were conceived not as ordinary mantel ornaments, but as impressive salon figures for affluent interiors, with the scale, paired design and theatrical presence expected of higher-tier mid-19th-century French porcelain.

The pair depicts a gallant and a young lady in stylised 18th-century costume, forming a romantic genre scene characteristic of Rococo Revival taste. The gentleman, holding a sealed letter, suggests courtship or formal declaration, while the lady’s poised theatrical elegance complements the narrative. Together they reflect the French fascination with idealised Louis XV-inspired refinement, transforming aristocratic imagery into decorative historicism for contemporary buyers.

Letu & Mauger was active in the second half of the 19th century and became known for biscuit and parian-type porcelain figures, including religious subjects, romantic genre scenes and larger decorative works for affluent interiors. The company occupied a respected niche within the market for quality French decorative porcelain, producing pieces that combined artistic ambition with strong commercial appeal. The impressed L & M marks and moulded model numbers are characteristic of its factory production. This pair belongs to the more ambitious side of their output, where scale, modelling and decorative presence were especially valued.

Executed in polychrome porcelain with restrained gilding and a bisque-like matt surface, the figures stand on naturalistic bases above separate black plinths with gilt ornament. Their impressive size, heavy construction and companion model numbering place them firmly above more common small decorative porcelain, reflecting Letu & Mauger’s stronger decorative production for prominent interior display.

Condition:

The male figure has a small chip under the coat near the pocket area, several minor firing cracks consistent with manufacture and age, and two feet on the base have been reattached. The female figure has several small firing cracks and has lost what was likely a small feather or similar ornament from the hat, which does not significantly affect display. Both figures remain in excellent antique condition overall. Due to their substantial size and weight, they will be shipped in two separate boxes for safe delivery, which will affect shipping cost.
