Rare Edo Period ‘Nanban’ Porcelain Koro – Bakumatsu Era C. 1860

19th century
Description

An exceptional and museum-quality Japanese porcelain Koro (incense burner), dating from the late Edo period, specifically the Bakumatsu era (1853–1867). This rare survivor represents a pivotal moment in world history: the reopening of Japan to the West. The “Nanban” (“Southern Barbarian”) subject matter — depicting European galleons and figures — was a direct artistic response to the historic encounter between Japan and the Western world.

The quality of this piece is exceptional. Unlike mass-produced export wares of the later Meiji era, this Koro exhibits the hallmarks of highly accomplished hand craftsmanship. Subtle irregularities of hand-moulding visible within the interior and on the base provide strong evidence of genuine Edo-period manufacture and individual workshop production from the twilight of the Samurai era.

The decoration features vibrant polychrome enamels and rich gilding. The ship’s rigging and the Europeans’ costumes are rendered with extraordinary detail. The elephant-head handles with free-moving rings and the Shishi lion finial on the lid remain beautifully preserved. While minute age-related crazing is visible under magnification deep within the enamel, the external preservation of the pigments and gilding is magnificent.

The base bears the “Fuku” (“Happiness”) mark, executed in the distinctive calligraphic manner associated with the “Zoshuntei Sanpo Zo” workshop of Hisatomi Yojibei I. In 1841, Yojibei I was granted the first exclusive licence to export Arita porcelain, making this an early and prestigious example connected with authorised international trade art. While later copies and imitations are common, a genuine Edo-period original of this calibre represents a significant collector’s find.

Nanban trade porcelain features decorative motifs depicting European trade ships, merchants, and Western cultural influences that arrived in Japan from the sixteenth century through the Edo period.

Edo period koros were crafted from hard-paste porcelain, painted with overglaze polychrome enamels and gold leaf, and topped with a fitted pierced lid to allow smoke to escape.

Authentic Bakumatsu era items display hand-applied enamel decoration with subtle irregularities in the glaze, age-appropriate wear on the foot rim, and traditional iconographic motifs.

A decorative koro serves as an intellectual accent piece when placed on a sideboard top, mantelpiece, or bookshelf alongside curated books and architectural objects.

Dust the item using a soft microfibre cloth or dry soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasives that can degrade delicate overglaze enamels and gilding.
