Pretty First Period Worcester Porcelain Small Chestnut Basket Pine Cone Patt. C.1770

18th century
For Sale by The Fancy Fox
Description

A Worcester porcelain basket of oval shape with pierced walls with grooved straps and scalloped rim to create a woven effect. Daisy flowers applied to the intersections and rope twist moulded handles to each end with ornate terminals of individually applied leaves, flowers and buds. Of unusually small size, it is still practical but much daintier than the usual similarly formed Worcester baskets. The inside is printed with the pine cone pattern with diaper and garland border to the rim. The handles and applied flowers and leaves are all hand painted with blue highlights. Unmarked, c.1775.

It measures 17.8cm (7") by 15cm (5 7/8") wide and 7.2cm (2 7/8") high.

Condition is excellent with damage, repair or restoration to the basket or handles. There are some usual minor losses to the applied leaves and petals at the handle terminals. There are three flowers absent from the top row on the outside walls but they are clearly an omission during manufacture and there is also an erroneous small dab of clay to one of the leaves of the main pattern. Minimal handling wear, no discernible wear to the glaze or surface scratches, etc. and the printing is nice and clear.

Declaration

The Fancy Fox has dated this Worcester Porcelain Chestnut Basket to the 18th Century.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

First Period Worcester refers to soft-paste porcelain produced by the Worcester Tonquin Manufacture between 1751 and 1783 under the direction of Dr John Wall.

Baskets from this era were made using soft-paste porcelain containing soaprock, featuring hand-cut reticulated openwork and cobalt blue underglaze decoration.

Authentic pieces feature underglaze blue transfer-printed floral and pine cone designs, characteristic crescent marks or worker marks on the base, and slight translucency under transmitted light.

Reticulated porcelain baskets can be displayed as a central decorative object on a sideboard, placed within a glazed cabinet, or integrated into a blue-and-white ceramics collection.

Clean soft-paste porcelain gently using tepid water and mild liquid soap with a soft brush, avoiding chemical cleaners, abrasive cloths, or submersion in water.
