Set of 6 19th Century Kitchen Farmhouse Dining Chairs

19th century
Description

A Charming Set Of 6 Early 19th Century Matching Ash & Elm Farmhouse Kitchen Windsor Dining Chairs, Having Scribed Edge To Typical Hooped Backs, With Elegant Turned Stick Spindles And Torpedo Supports To Back, Over Well Figured Shaped Seats, Raised On Very Elegant Turned Legs And Stretchers.

These are a really quite beautiful set of basically matching kitchen dining chairs. The only real differences are a slight variation in dimensions due to the natural movement of wood over hundreds of years which has resulted in some having a marginally lower seat than others.

It was quite rare for windsor chairs to actually be made and supplied in a set all at the same time, with families instead tending to order them on an ad hoc, when required type basis.

These chairs are constructed from lovely ash and elm timbers and have retained a lovely colour and patina to go with how beautifully figured they are.

They are sound in construction with no loose joints to speak of and have been through our workshop for a good clean and polish.

They have real elegance, but also practicality and are surprisingly comfortable to sit on for day to day use. They would suit a wide variety of tables and styles of house.

Perfect around the kitchen table these are a great design of chair. They are relatively robust, whilst also being elegant and small enough to tuck nicely around a table at the same time. This is often a difficult combination to find with english country chairs.

As with all items we offer for sale the chairs have been inspected and any minor issues attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers before being offered for sale. They have also received a natural wax polish ensuring they are in tip top condition and ready to place straight into the home after purchase.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century country kitchen chairs, often made in the Windsor or stick-back style, are characteristically crafted with solid contoured timber seats, turned support legs, and vertical back spindles held within a curved hoop frame.

Regional makers typically used locally sourced native hardwoods, frequently combining elm for the broad contoured seat with oak, ash, or beech for the turned legs and bentwood back hoops.

Authentic period chairs feature wedged blind tenons on the top of the seat board, hand-turned stretcher rails with slight irregularities, and evidence of historical wear on lower stretchers and leg tips.

Arranging a uniform set of dark timber farmhouse chairs around a minimalist stone or modern pale wood dining table creates a grounded contrast between traditional craft and modern design.

Apply a clear beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain to preserve the patinated surface finish, and ensure timber joints are kept away from direct heat sources to prevent shrinkage.
