Large “Amphora” Austria Monumental Art Nouveau Pottery Vase, C. 1895–1910

Description

A monumental Austrian “Amphora” pottery vase of exceptional scale, produced circa 1895–1910 in Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia. At 51 cm high, this is a striking example from Amphora’s most ambitious artistic period.

Its tall, elegant form, wide flaring neck, sculptural base, and dramatic openwork handles create immediate visual impact. The pierced olive-green collar below the neck is particularly notable, with numerous hand-cut openings demonstrating exceptionally labour-intensive workmanship.

Rich stylised scrolls, foliate ornament, suspended teardrop motifs, and moulded relief decoration are combined with an ivory ground and olive, rose-brown, and gilt accents typical of Amphora’s finer artistic wares.

The underside bears the Amphora crown mark with AUSTRIA and model number 12000, confirming factory production within the celebrated Turn-Teplitz tradition.

Established by Alfred Stellmacher in 1892, Amphora rapidly became one of Europe’s leading producers of luxury artistic ceramics, earning international awards and strong export success, including sales through Tiffany & Co. Monumental examples of this scale are increasingly sought after for their technical complexity and display presence.

Produced predominantly in the Turn-Teplitz region of Bohemia (then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) between 1892 and 1915, Amphora pottery is recognized for its organic, sculpted forms, complex glazes, and intricate applied surface ornament such as relief beadwork and pierced handles.

These vessels were typically slip-cast using fine earthenware or terracotta clay. Surface decoration involved hand-applied relief details, reticulated piercing, cold-painted enamels, matte slip glazes, and gilding before undergoing multiple kiln firings.
