Imposing 17th Century Portuguese Colonial Mahogany and Brass Chest

17th century
For Sale by Loveday Antiques
Description

An imposing 17th Century mahogany Portuguese colonial trunk / chest, of grand proportions, decorated with pierced brass panels.

Probably Brazil, circa 1670.

This rare chest is of Iberian design, that first emerged in the 16th century with its distinctive lozenge panelling.

The large hinged mahogany top having a jacaranda timber moulded edge, secured by a wonderful large central iron lock, retaining its original hand forged key, opening to reveal a large storage compartment. Below are three bolection-moulded panels applied with decorative pierced and scrolling brass panels, the central acting as an escutcheon, with the conforming sides having carrying handles.

In two sections, the top sits over a base raised on compressed bun feet, housing two fielded panelled apron drawers, with central brass escutcheons and conforming faux sides.

In wonderful original condition with good colour and patina having been wax polished, the bottom two drawers lacking locks.

An extremely impressive chest / trunk with the brass lozenge designed panels giving it a very decorative feel, which will work well in todays interiors as a statement piece.

It is very possible this originated from Brazil and would have most likely been used to store items of wealth, the likes of the families silver etc.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Portuguese Colonial furniture from the 17th century combines Iberian Baroque influences with exotic hardwoods sourced through global trade routes. These pieces frequently feature geometric panelling, decorative brass embellishments, and robust proportions designed for durability and storage.

These chests were typically crafted using dense tropical hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or teak, held together with hand-cut dovetail joints. Surface ornamentation often incorporated pierced brass mounts, hand-forged iron handles, and turned bun feet.

Authentic period coffers exhibit hand-sawn wood marks on non-visible surfaces, irregular dovetail jointing, and original oxidisation on iron or brass hardware. The timber often shows uneven wear and natural shrinkage around panel joints consistent with centuries of age.

A substantial wooden coffer functions effectively as a focal point in a hallway, at the foot of a bed, or as an anchor piece in a living area. Contrast its dark timber and detailed woodwork against minimalist walls and neutral textiles to highlight its historical silhouetting.

Maintain the wood finish by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish sparingly along the grain. Keep brass fittings free of harsh chemical cleaners, allowing the natural patina to develop while preserving surrounding timber from moisture.
