Georgian Multi Spiral Air Twist Ale Glass, Double Knop, Bell Bowl

18th century
Description

This is a tall Georgian, English, multi spiral air twist ale glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1750.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has an extended bell-shaped bowl measuring 6.8 cm (2.7 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is plain and sits on a multi spiral air twist stem with shoulder and medial knops. The stem ends in a conical foot which measures 7.8 cm (3.1 inches) in diameter. The glass is 20.5 cm (8.2 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is an unburst bubble in the metal of the bowl and a minute white inclusion near the edge of the foot, both dating from manufacture.

English lead glass weighing in at 165 g. (~ 6 oz.).

Provenance: Peter Eales Collection, Bonhams, 26 June 2025, lot 28; The Cannon Collection

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Air twist glassware originated in mid-eighteenth-century Britain, featuring internal spiral patterns formed by drawing air bubbles through molten glass before shaping the stem.

These items were hand-blown using heavy lead flint glass, formed by drawing out air pockets trapped within the stem gathering to form intricate internal spirals.

Authentic pieces typically display hand-blown irregularities, a snapped or ground pontil mark underneath the foot, natural wear patterns around the bottom rim, and high lead content weight.

Display these glassware items within illuminated glass cabinets, arranged on a dark wood sideboard, or integrated into a curated barware collection to highlight the stem detail.

Wash gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild dish detergent, avoiding high temperatures, dishwasher use, and sudden thermal shock.
