Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a wide or arched mirror specifically sized to rest on or hang directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors were engineered to reflect candlelight and firelight, dramatically increasing the brightness and visual scale of reception rooms.

19th-century overmantel frames were typically constructed from pine or lime wood, layered with plaster or gesso to create detailed mouldings, and then finished with paint, gilding, or metal leaf. The mirror plates comprised silvered flat glass backed by solid timber boards for structural protection.

Authentic period examples generally display multi-plank softwood backboards with hand-cut joinery, gentle oxidisation or foxing on the glass, and natural wear or fine cracking along the gesso mouldings where the timber frame has naturally expanded and contracted over time.

Position the mirror directly above a chimneypiece or atop a substantial hall console table to serve as a central architectural focal point. Neutral painted finishes pair seamlessly with both traditional lime-washed walls and bold modern wall paint, framing light across the room.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft microfibre brush to protect delicate painted gesso. Clean the mirror glass by spraying glass cleaner directly onto a cloth rather than the surface to prevent liquid from seeping behind the frame moulding and degrading the silvering.
