19th century
Description

This rare 19th Century Venetian Pietro Bigaglia and Jacopo Franchini Murrine* glass scent bottle dates circa 1850. The bottle with a vibrant silver aventurine glass background and swirling hues of blue and white. The body with a total of eight star-shaped canes also known as murrine inclusions.

The neck adorned with a gilt metal hinged cap topped with a red glass jewel. The hinged lid opening to reveal the original cork and black glass stopper.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the mid-nineteenth century, Venetian glassmakers revived ancient Roman glassmaking techniques, including murrine micro-mosaics and aventurine foil techniques. Artisan workshops in Murano created intricate miniature vessels, such as scent bottles, which became highly sought-after luxury accessories across Europe.

These pieces were crafted using hand-blown soda glass embedded with cross-sectioned glass canes known as murrine, alongside metallic silver or gold foil flakes. Stopper mounts were typically constructed from gilded brass, silver-gilt, or nickel, often featuring hand-chased relief work and decorative gemstones.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display irregular, hand-cut murrine patterns and pontil scars or smoothed bases typical of hand-blown production. The fitted metal collar and screw-cap stopper usually exhibit period-correct oxidation, hand-engraved patterns, and fine thread construction.

Display scent bottles on a mirrored vanity tray, an antique sideboard, or inside a glass-fronted curio cabinet where ambient lighting can highlight the translucent colours and internal metallic inclusions. Grouping them with complementary period silver and glassware creates a curated focal point.

Dust the glass surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, taking care not to submerge the bottle in liquid. Metal caps should be kept dry to prevent corrosion or moisture damage to internal stoppers.
