Large 19th Century Tibetan Buddhist Copper Repoussé Plaque with Silver Dragon and Ashtamangala in Brass

19th century
Description

A large and impressive Tibetan Buddhist plaque, 19th century, of circular dished form worked in mixed metals — copper, brass, and silver — and beautifully hand-chased throughout in high relief. The copper ground is hammered in dense, scrolling cloud (Tib. trin) motifs, the broad sloping rim shaped as a band of eight overlapping lotus petals, each enclosing a stylised lotus blossom amid swirling cloud and ribbon scrolls.

The recessed central field is applied with a circular silver medallion finely repoussé with a sinuous coiled dragon among clouds in pursuit of the flaming pearl, fixed by four copper rivets, and surrounded by a ring of eight raised brass cartouches of cusped quatrefoil form, each chased with one of the Ashtamangala — the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Tibetan Buddhism: the parasol (chattra), the pair of golden fishes (matsya), the treasure vase (kalasha), the lotus (padma), the conch shell (shankha), the endless knot (shrivatsa), the victory banner (dhvaja), and the dharma wheel (dharmachakra) — the whole encircled by a beaded brass rim.

The reverse retains its hand-hammered copper surface with visible rivet ends and tool marks, attesting to traditional construction. Dimensions: diameter 34.5 cm, height 3.5 cm, weight 861 g.

In good antique condition, retaining a rich warm patina with natural oxidation across the three metals; surface wear and a few small scratches to the reverse consistent with age and use, otherwise free of significant losses or restoration. A genuine and substantial piece of nineteenth-century Himalayan Buddhist metalwork with great decorative presence. Please carefully regard all photos as they make an integral part of the listing, and reach out if there are any questions

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
