Salt-glazed stoneware is ceramic pottery fired at high temperatures with common salt introduced into the kiln during firing, creating a translucent, impervious glaze with a characteristic orange-peel texture. Originating in Germany and widely produced across Europe, it was favoured for durable liquid storage containers throughout the 18th century.

These vessels were hand-thrown on a potters wheel using dense stoneware clay capable of withstanding intense heat. Handles were attached separately by hand, and capacity numbers or trade marks were impressed into the moist clay prior to firing.
