ANTIQUE #SA1211118

An Antique Van Dyke Decorated Box/basket - Specimen Woods

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Opus Antiques

This is a really great piece with many attributes.

The box has a rosewood lid with the original brass knob intact. It has its original bentwood handle veneered in rosewood and edged in boxwood. The base has been decorated with a Van Dyke pattern, meaning geometric patterns of interlocking triangles of different woods. The name comes from Van Dykes scalloped collars in his paintings.

The black triangles are ebony and then inside the box is a typed sheet telling us what the other woods are from oyster yew, blackthorn and boxwood to lacewood, oak and laburnum to name a few.

The contrasting woods used give a striking appearance.

The interior is lined with the original blue paper.

This box stands on its four original brass ball feet.

It measures 18cm w x 12cm d.
