A rare and highly desirable late Victorian art pottery jug, produced at the celebrated Sunflower Pottery Studio, Clevedon Court, Somerset, circa 1890, and fully signed by the renowned aristocratic potter Sir Edmund Elton.

Elton’s distinctive studio pottery is highly regarded for its artistic innovation, unusual forms, and richly experimental glazes. Produced in very limited numbers as individual works of art, these exceptional pieces were retailed through high-end shops and prestigious stores in England and America, where they commanded premium prices even in their day. Today, authentic signed examples are increasingly scarce and sought after by collectors of British studio pottery and Victorian art ceramics.

This particularly attractive example is a stylised art pottery jug, beautifully designed with an elegant, tapering, bulbous body that rises to a narrow neck that flares into a shaped, open top, accompanied by a separate short spout and a graceful handle, giving the piece a wonderfully sculptural and organic quality.

The jug is finished in Elton’s characteristic thick marbled crackle glaze, displaying a striking blend of blue, green, and brown tones, creating a rich iridescent depth of colour. It is further enhanced by delicate trailing floral and foliate decoration, adding movement and decorative refinement to this already exceptional work.

The underside is fully signed by Elton, confirming authenticity.
