Opaline glass is a decorative style of semi-translucent or opaque blown glass developed in France during the early 19th century. Inspired by Chinese porcelain and Venetian glass, it reached peak popularity between 1800 and 1870, with major French glassworks producing items in milky whites and pastel tones.

Opaline glass was hand-blown using sodic glass combined with bone ash, tin dioxide, or cryolite to achieve its characteristic opaque, milky appearance. Contrast trims, such as coloured glass rims, were applied by hand while the main vessel was still malleable.

Authentic 19th-century pieces generally show signs of hand-blowing, such as a ground and polished pontil mark on the base. Early Baccarat opaline pieces rarely had acid-etched marks, which were introduced later, but display superior glass weight, smooth finish, and precise applied details.
