Vintage Folk Art Butcher's Advertising Pig Gloucester Old Spot

1920 - 1940
Description

This is a very characterful model of a prize pig dating from the early 20th Century.

Fashioned in the form of a heavy sow, the Gloucester Old Spot pig would have been a butcher's advertising piece, taking pride of place in the butchers shop window. The composite model captures the pig really well and she has a very endearing face.

With a little wear to the paint this is otherwise in great condition and is a good size, measuring 35 cms long and 15 cms wide.

UK delivery is £15.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Butcher shop advertising figures originated in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as promotional trade models. Shops displayed these stylised animal sculptures in windows and on counters to indicate specific livestock breeds or meat products available.

Trade figures from this era were typically constructed from painted plaster, carved timber, composite resin, or papier-mache. The surfaces were hand-painted and sealed to withstand shop counter display.

Authentic pieces show realistic age-related surface wear, paint flaking, and oxidation. Inspecting the underside often reveals mould join lines, hand-carving marks, or historic mounting points from trade counter fixtures.

These sculptural objects function well as focal accents on a sideboard top, kitchen island, or open pantry shelving. Positioning the sculpture alongside plain glazed ceramics or natural timber surfaces complements its textured finish.

Dust the surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or fine-bristled brush. Avoid water, liquid solvents, or abrasive cleaners, as moisture can compromise historic paint layers and underlying plaster.
