Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 18th-century France, Louis XV style writing tables, often known as bureaux plats, feature curvilinear cabriole legs, asymmetrical Rococo ornamentation, and intricate marquetry floral motifs. They were designed as central statement pieces for personal correspondence in formal reception rooms.

These tables feature wood veneers such as kingwood, tulipwood, and rosewood arranged in floral or geometric patterns. They are embellished with chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and edge mouldings designed to protect corners and reinforce structural joints.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, historical timber shrinkage, and hand-cast bronze mounts secured with early thread screws. Inspecting the underside reveals hand-sawn secondary timbers like oak or pine, alongside natural patination on both wood and bronze components.

Position the desk as a freestanding focal point in a contemporary study, hallway, or living area to allow complete view of its details. Pairing it with modern lighting or an architectural backdrop creates contrast between the classical ornamentation and clean interior lines.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply beeswax sparingly to protect the wood grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, and humidity fluctuations to prevent veneer movement or discolouration of the gilt mounts.
