Oak Dresser Base with Blind Silhouette Legs, C1760

18th century
Description

A stunning oak dresser base with blind silhouette legs, c1760, original handles and locks (locks to 2 drawers only) with good colour.

Dimensions of 203cms (80") long and 80cms (31.5") contribute to an elegant / sleek look.

Restoration: Various historic restorations include the addition of a 2" rear overhang, obviously done a long time ago as patination / colour matches well, removal of floor height front stretcher, later tips to rear legs, additions to underside of drawers to aid smooth running.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian oak dresser base is a mid-to-late 18th-century storage piece featuring a long rectangular surface above a row of drawers, typically designed without an upper rack. These pieces served as servers in dining rooms or kitchens, characterised by regional timber construction and flat or shaped aprons.

These items were predominantly constructed from solid native hardwoods such as English oak, featuring hand-dovetailed drawer boxes and wooden peg joinery. Decorative elements often included cast brass swan-neck handles, drop escutcheons, and hand-shaped apron silhouettes.

Authentic period examples exhibit signs of hand-planed timber surfaces, irregular dovetail joints, and historic wear along the base of the legs. Original brassware usually leaves shadow marks or double-hole conversions if replaced over time, and the interior drawers show natural timber shrinkage gaps.

A dresser base functions well as a hallway console table or a dining room sideboard. Pairing dark aged oak with neutral contemporary walls, modern artwork hung above, and minimal decorative ceramics creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Maintain the original finish by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage, warping, or splitting.
