This is as good as it gets for a goose wing knitting sheath. It has everything going for it.
Firstly it''s made of yew wood, a very prized wood. It is dated 1882, this has been inlaid into the wood.
There are also stars, hearts and diamonds all love token symbols.
There is a fish inlay, maybe made or given by a fisherman, there is even some small dot inlay and carved decorative edges.
It''s a really striking piece.
Probably originating from Middleton in Teesdale, its right by the river Tees, renowned for its fishing, hence the fish inlay.
The sheath measures 24.5cm l x 6cm w at the widest point.
