Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bobbin turning, also known as spool turning, originated in the seventeenth century and experienced major revivals during the Victorian and Arts and Crafts eras. The technique involves using a wood lathe to shape timber into a series of repeating rounded bulbs or spools, creating a distinct decorative rhythm.

These pieces were traditionally crafted from solid hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or beech. The legs and stretchers were shaped on a foot-treadle or powered wood lathe, while decorative tops were often hand-carved or panelled using traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

Authentic period pieces typically feature slight variations in the turned bobbins due to hand-lathe work rather than uniform modern machine production. Look for signs of age such as natural wood shrinkage, original joinery pegs, tool marks on the underside, and an aged patina in low-wear areas.

A small bobbin-turned table functions as an architectural accent alongside modern upholstered seating or as a plant stand in a hallway. The textured turned legs and carved surfaces add warmth, tactile contrast, and historical depth to minimal or transitional spaces.

Dust regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth, following the grain of the wood and taking care around carved relief work. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to feed the timber and preserve the original surface patina, avoiding silicone-based sprays.
