Oak Shelving Unit Circa 1920

1900 - 1920
Description

Oak Shelving Unit Circa 1920

£475

Solid Oak shelving unit that completely knocks down into component form. This piece has seven shelves that are tusk tenoned into the sides, with two oak pegs per shelf. Lovely storage for books – you’d get loads on this and, being solid, they won’t sag like your modern chipboard or MDF based unit!

The top has a decorative top rail in lovely quartered oak, whilst there’s a similar piece; albeit less decorative at the bottom, both adding rigidity for a free-standing unit. You could fix it to the wall too if you wanted – making it super-strong!

Lovely golden oak colour that’s been cleaned, polished and waxed.

Dimensions:

Height: 1715mm

Width: 950mm

Depth: 280mm

Shelf Depth 220mm

We are furniture restorers and cabinet makers too and happy to discuss restoring your pieces – you can email us at jon@jonhillfurniture.com

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Arts and Crafts furniture from this period emphasizes functional design, honest craftsmanship, and structural transparency. Key characteristics include exposed joinery, straight geometric lines, and the prominent use of native hardwoods such as oak.

Bookcases of this era frequently feature mortise and tenon joinery secured with visible wooden pegs or keys. Shelves were often slotted or held by side supports to allow wood expansion without structural compromise.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-finished peg details, uniform aging along shelf edges, and characteristic medullary rays visible in quartersawn oak. Hardware or fittings from this era typically show subtle imperfections from hand manufacturing.

Open bookcases provide vertical storage without visually enclosing a room. Modern styling often pairs them with monochrome ceramics, framed artwork, and neatly stacked books to balance historical timber tones with contemporary decor.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft dry microfiber cloth. Preserve the timber finish by applying a thin coat of natural beeswax polish annually, rubbing along the grain and avoiding modern liquid sprays containing silicones.
