Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Door porters gained prominence during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to hold heavy timber doors open, preventing drafts in large country houses. Early examples were cast in iron or brass, often featuring figurative motifs such as animals, crests, or architectural elements, with tall handles attached for ease of movement without bending down.

Traditional doorstops were manufactured using heavy cast metals, predominantly solid brass, cast iron, or bronze. The base was frequently weighted with lead or iron inserts to provide sufficient stability against heavy doors, while the visible exterior was finished in polished or patinated metalwork.

Authentic pieces from the early twentieth century generally feature heavy casting with hand-finished crisp details along the seams and facial features. They often exhibit natural oxidisation, slight wear around the handle grip, and a weighted cast-iron base screwed or secured beneath the brass shroud.

A cast brass doorstop functions well alongside traditional or modern entryway joinery, adding texture to timber or painted doors. Beyond its functional application, it can be styled as a sculpture on a fireplace hearth, within an open bookshelf, or alongside a low console table.

Dust the item regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove surface dirt from detailed areas. To preserve the aged patina, avoid abrasive chemical cleaners; applying a light coat of natural microcrystalline wax will protect the metal surface from tarnishing while maintaining its historical finish.
