Pair of Antique Broad Arm Windsor Chairs

19th century
Description

A good example of a pair of Broad Arm Windsor chairs dating from the mid to late 19th century. They are made from ash and elm and both have a high hooped back enclosing turned spindles with a pierced back splat. They stand on turned legs joined by a H-stretcher.

There are some minor differences in sizes between the two chairs but they are approximately 43" (109cm) high and 25 1/2" (65cm) wide across the arms. The seats are 18" (46cm) deep and 17" (43cm) high.

They are both in good original condition with a lovely rich patina. There are signs of age and use and some marks, light knocks and wear on the seats and around the legs but nothing detrimental. There have been some repairs over the years but nothing untoward and they are both strong and sturdy. They have been gently cleaned and polished and are ready for use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Windsor chairs originated in England during the early eighteenth century, primarily made by rural craftspeople in regions like Buckinghamshire. They were designed with spindle backs and solid wooden seats, evolving into various regional styles widely used in homes, taverns, and gardens.

Traditional English Windsor chairs were constructed using a combination of regional hardwoods. Elm was typically selected for the solid saddle seat due to its cross-grained strength, while ash, oak, or yew wood were used for the steam-bent back hoops, spindles, and turned legs.

Authentic period Windsor chairs often feature hand-carved saddle seats with visible wedge joints on the top surface where the legs penetrate the wood. Additional indicators include irregular tool marks, uneven wear on foot rungs, and natural shrinkage line variations around turned spindles.

Windsor armchairs can be styled as accent seating flanking a fireplace, placed at the ends of a modern dining table, or paired with contemporary neutral textiles to introduce warmth and historic texture into a modern living space.

To preserve antique wooden seating, clean surfaces regularly with a dry, soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber splitting or joint shrinkage.
