Oil Painting of a Terrier by Henry Crowther

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine oil on canvas depicting a terrier by the specialist dog painter Henry Crowther. The work is typical for the artist, and animal portraiture of the time, with the dog positioned in the centre of a landscape setting. The painting is very competently handled and depicts what is most likely a short haired terrier which is also named as ‘Miss Barrage’ The painting is in very good condition and is signed to the lower left and dated 1920. There is little known about Henry Crowther who must have been a travelling artist who specialised in animal portraiture, particularly dogs, he was prolific and painted a large array of breeds between 1905 and 1929. The gilt frame is not the original but is of the period and has a great worn look that works very well with the piece. The whole is a fine and desirable work by this well collected artist.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

British canine and sporting art gained immense popularity during the 19th and early 20th centuries, driven by interest in breeding, hunting, and domestic pets. Artists such as Henry Crowther specialised in detailed portraits of prized dogs, documenting specific breeds against pastoral countryside backgrounds.

These artworks were typically executed using oil paints on stretched canvas or wooden panels, housed in moulded or carved gilded wooden frames. Canvas preparation involved layers of gesso ground to create a smooth surface suitable for precise brushwork.

Authentic period paintings display uniform craquelure across the paint layer, age-appropriate discolouration of the varnish, and historic stretcher construction on the reverse. Artist signatures, dates, or framer labels on the back also assist in authentication.

Position the framed artwork as a focal feature above a fireplace mantelpiece or side table to add historical depth to a contemporary room. Displaying traditional oil paintings alongside minimalist furnishings creates a balanced, curated aesthetic.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and direct heat sources to prevent canvas warping or varnish cracking. Gently dust the frame with a dry brush, avoiding water or liquid chemical cleaners on gilded surfaces.
