Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian papier-mache furniture consists of decorative household pieces created from compressed paper sheets or pulp, impregnated with oil and lacquered. Popular throughout the nineteenth century, these pieces were typically painted black and decorated with gilding, floral designs, or Chinoiserie landscapes.

The tray tops were fabricated using layers of paper, glue, and linseed oil, baked hard and coated with black asphaltum varnish or lacquer. The accompanying stands were predominantly made from turned hardwood, finished with ebonisation to match the tray.

Authentic items feature substantial weight and density due to heavily compressed paper layers, fine surface craquelure, and hand-painted or mother-of-pearl decoration. Some original nineteenth-century trays bear impressed maker stamps on the underside, such as Jennens & Bettridge.

A papier-mache tray table functions well as a low coffee table or occasional side table in living spaces. The dark ebonised finish and gold detailing create tonal contrast alongside contemporary upholstered furniture.

Clean gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid moisture, chemical cleaners, and direct sunlight, as excessive humidity can soften the underlying adhesives and light can cause lacquer fading.
