An 18th Century Period Overdoor Painted Panel

18th century
Description

Superb mid 18th Century French overdoor panel, the walnut frame containing a monochrome oil painting of a country estate, grounds with house in the distance, painted like a grisaille (in greys) but here in hues of blue and called "en camaïeu".

Louis XV period, in sturdy condition, the walnut frame with historical wormholes long extinct, the oil painting on its original canvas and intricate stretcher (see photos of the beautiful back)

The panel, which used to hang over a chateau interior doorway between rooms, is untouched and utterly original. It measures 108cm in width and 56cm in height. Such a beautiful relic from the time of the great king Louis XV.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overdoor panel, traditionally referred to as a dessus-de-porte, is a decorative architectural feature designed to sit directly above a doorway. Popular in 17th and 18th-century European interiors, these panels were typically framed with ornate carved moulding and contained painted landscape, allegorical, or floral scenes.

Period overdoor panels were typically constructed using solid timber frames, such as oak or pine, which were carved with decorative scrollwork. The central image was rendered in oil or distemper paint directly onto a wooden panel or onto a fitted canvas stretched within the wooden surround.

Authentic period panels display characteristics such as natural timber shrinkage, hand-cut joinery, and craquelure within the paint layer consistent with age. Additionally, the carved embellishments should show hand-tooled execution rather than modern machine precision, along with appropriate patina on the unpainted surfaces.

An architectural overdoor panel can be mounted above a doorway, positioned as a central piece above a fireplace mantelpiece, or hung over a sideboard as framed wall art. Integrating historical architectural elements into contemporary spaces provides texture and visual structure.

Keep painted wood panels away from direct sources of heat, extreme humidity, and direct sunlight to prevent timber warping and paint flaking. Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or harsh chemicals.
