Antique Folk Art String Photo Picture Frame Octagram Star Shape C1920’s Post WWI

1900 - 1920
Description

A Early 20th Century Folk Art String Frame in Octagram or Star shape. By looking at the way the gentleman are dressed I would say it dates from just after WWI World War 1, early 1920’s.

Vivid colours if red, orange, gold, brown and blue. Glazed.

The string work has been done around the photo and glass so is permanent, ie the photo cannot be removed.

In very good condition for its age, glass still in tact, still bright in colour.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Folk art string frames originated as decorative home crafts, notably gaining popularity during the early 20th century and the interwar period. Artisans and hobbyists wrapped thread, yarn, or cord around wooden or card foundations to create intricate geometric patterns and star shapes.

These frames feature a card, paperboard, or lightweight wooden core wrapped tightly with cotton string, woollen yarn, or embroidery thread. Geometric layers were formed using contrasting thread colours such as red, gold, and neutral beige.

Authentic period pieces exhibit age-consistent wear to the natural fibres, subtle fading of traditional dyes, and hand-tied finishing knots. The enclosed portrait photography frequently retains original black-and-white or sepia tones typical of the era.

Display the frame within a gallery wall arrangement alongside small oil paintings or monochrome prints to add rich textile texture and geometric structure. It also serves as a focal point when hung individually in an entryway, study, or alcove.

Keep string art items away from direct sunlight and damp environments to prevent colour fading and fibre degradation. Dust carefully using a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth without applying water or chemical cleaners.
