FAQs

Puce camaieu is a monochrome painting technique using shades of a single reddish-purple hue derived from gold oxide. Popular during the 18th century on tin-glazed faience, this method allowed ceramic painters to create depth, shading, and detailed figurative or landscape compositions.

Craftsmen shaped clay bodies before applying an opaque white lead glaze suspended with tin oxide. Once dry, artists painted directly onto the unfired or biscuit-fired glaze using metallic oxides, followed by a second kiln firing to fuse the colours and create a glassy finish.

Authentic pieces often exhibit slight irregularities in the earthenware body, evidence of handmade throwing or moulding, and firing support marks on the reverse side. The glaze may show minor pinholes, natural crazing, or rim wear consistent with age.

These ceramic pieces are frequently displayed on plate stands atop sideboards, arranged inside glazed cabinetry, or mounted directly on walls to form decorative gallery displays within traditional or eclectic interiors.
