We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George III style fireplace surrounds, originating in the mid-to-late eighteenth century, are defined by Neoclassical symmetry and classical architectural proportions. Common decorative elements include fluted pilasters, husk garlands, urns, and urn-and-swag mouldings influenced by architects such as Robert Adam.

Georgian mantelpieces were frequently crafted from softwoods such as pine or deal, intended either to be painted or decorated with applied gesso details. Higher-end examples incorporated carved marble or fine hardwoods like mahogany and oak.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of hand-carving, hand-applied gesso ornamentation, and traditional joinery such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joints. Age-related shrinkage, faint traces of early paint layers in recesses, and natural oxidisation of the pine backboards also signal authenticity.

A period mantelpiece can be installed as a architectural focal point around a working grate, a stove, or an ornamental hearth space. Styling the shelf with minimal modern ceramics or hanging a modern piece of artwork above creates a balanced dialogue between historic and modern design elements.

Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush to avoid dislodging delicate gesso details. Avoid applying water or harsh chemical cleaners, which degrade historical gesso and finishes; periodic light wax polishing on unpainted wood areas helps preserve the timber.
