Rare King Charles I (1600 - 1649) - Line Engraving C.1625 After Daniel Mitjens.

Description

A rare line engraving of King Charles I which dates to 1625 and was produced to commemorate his marriage to Henrietta Maria of France. A very clean and crisp edition, with printed inscription in lower border which reads:

‘Ce, Roy par ses perfections Ou gagne les affections. Faict si bien au vice la querre De tous ses peuples d’Angleterre’

‘This King, by his perfections, Or wins the affections. So well makes vice the quarrel Of all the peoples of England’

And outside the plate but within mount further inscribed in pen.

‘Portrait de Charles I Roi d'Angleterre decapité a Londres par les republicains Revoltes Contre lui - Estampe rare grave a Paris a lepoque de Son marriage avec la fille de Henri IV’

‘Portrait of Charles I, King of England, beheaded in London by the Republican Revolts Against Him - Rare print engraved in Paris at the time of his marriage to the daughter of Henry IV.’

A proxy marriage was held at Notre-Dame de Paris on 1st May 1625 where Duke Claude of Chevreuse stood as proxy for Charles. The couple met in person for the first time on 13th June 1625 in Canterbury.
