Museum-grade Nathaniel Mills Silver-gilt Vinaigrette (1833) – Red Moroccan Leather Original Case & Sponge

19th century
Description

Museum-Grade Nathaniel Mills Silver-Gilt Vinaigrette (1833) – Original Case & Sponge

The Ultimate Collector’s Specimen: Nathaniel Mills Silver-Gilt Vinaigrette (1833)

Offered here is an exceptional William IV silver-gilt vinaigrette by the "King of the Box Makers," Nathaniel Mills. This 1833 Birmingham piece is a rare "triple threat" for the serious collector—retaining its original presentation case, its original natural sponge, and featuring a crisp, vacant cartouche.

Master Craftsmanship: Features Mills’ signature deep engine-turned "basket-weave" decoration to the lid and base, framed by a high-relief floral scroll border.

Pristine Interior: The heavy "lemon gold" gilding remains vibrant. The hand-pierced floral grille is in perfect condition, opening to reveal the extremely rare original natural sea sponge.

Vacant Cartouche: The central rectangular plaque has never been engraved, a rarity for a piece of this age, allowing it to remain exactly as it left the workshop 193 years ago.

Original Presentation Case: Housed in its original red Morocco leather and silk-lined case. The leather has a beautiful aged patina, and the hook-and-eye clasp is fully functional.

Technical Specifications:

Maker: Nathaniel Mills (stamped "NM")

Date: 1833 (Date letter "k")

Origin: Birmingham, England

Length: 3.6cm

Weight: 21.3g (Solid, high-gauge silver)

Condition Report: Excellent antique condition. No thinning to the silver, no repairs to the hinges, and the gilding is remarkably preserved. A true "cabinet piece" that has clearly spent its life protected inside its original box.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popular during the 18th and 19th centuries, a vinaigrette was a small decorative container designed to hold a sponge soaked in aromatic oils or vinegar to ward off offensive odours and revive the user.

These items were typically crafted from sterling silver with an interior or exterior layer of gilding to protect the metal from corroding due to acidic liquids, featuring intricate engine turning and pierced grilles.

Genuine pieces feature clear British hallmarks stamped on both the outer case and inner hinged grille, indicating the maker mark, town mark, date letter, and silver purity standard.

Small silver objects of vertu are frequently displayed in glass-fronted cabinets, positioned alongside desk accessories in a study, or arranged within small decorative trays on console tables.

Clean the silver-gilt exterior gently using a soft, non-abrasive dry cloth without harsh silver polishes, while keeping the leather case in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight.
