FAQs

Empire style emerged in early nineteenth-century France, drawing heavy inspiration from Greek, Roman, and Egyptian classical architecture. Mirrors of this era typically feature symmetrical forms, fluted or plain columns, pediment tops, and ebonised or mahogany timber highlighted with gilt ornament.

Traditional construction paired dark or ebonised hardwoods with gilded pine, lime, or bronze accents. Mirror plates from the early nineteenth century were made using silver or mercury backing onto hand-blown glass, often set within architectural columned frames.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved joinery, square-headed nails or wooden pegs on the back, and original mercury glass exhibiting natural oxidisation or dark spots. Look for heavy solid timber backings and cast bronze or finely carved gilded details rather than lightweight plaster composite.

Position them symmetrically on either side of a large window, doorway, or fireplace to enhance natural light and architectural balance. They also function effectively in entryways or mounted above matching console tables in a hallway.

Dust gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth or horsehair brush to prevent lifting leaf finish. Never apply liquid cleaners or water directly to gilding; clean glass plates carefully with a soft cloth dampened with dilute water, avoiding moisture contact with the frame.
