Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Victorian era, advancements in iron foundries enabled the production of highly detailed decorative classical urns. Often modeled on classical Greek and Roman shapes such as the campana urn, these vessels were widely manufactured to adorn formal gardens, terraces, and urban public parks.

These urns were manufactured by pouring molten grey iron into sand moulds. They were typically cast in separate sectionsincluding the rim, main bowl, foot, and square pedestal baseand joined together using central threaded iron rods or internal bolt fittings.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature sharp casting details alongside visible mould seams, significant weight, and evidence of original assembly methods. They frequently display multiple layers of historical paint alongside natural surface oxidisation and weathering.

A patinated cast iron urn can be placed on a stone terrace, positioned to flank a principal entranceway, or brought indoors to serve as a focal point within a conservatory, hallway, or garden room.

To maintain the historic surface finish without causing further degradation, clean gentle debris using a soft dry brush. Ensure drainage pathways remain clear to prevent water collecting and expanding during frost, and apply a neutral microcrystalline wax if the object is displayed indoors.
