Early 19th Century Fine Quality Set of Six Regency Rosewood Dining Chairs

19th century
Description

An early 19th century (circa 1820) fine quality set of six Regency rosewood dining chairs.

This set of chairs each consist of a wide top rail with scrolling decoration with finely carved rosette and foliate design.

The side supports having gadrooned carving with scrolling and moulded decoration to the central support.

This leads down to the drop in seats, recently re-upholstered but these can easily be changed by the purchaser to a fabric of choice.

Each front seat rail consists of three carved paterae with larger paterae to the top of each front leg, the legs being turned and reeded with tulip style carving terminating with a bobbin turned foot with splay legs to the back.

This set of chairs are in very good condition for age, are of stable construction with evidence of some old restoration (to be expected) and can go straight into a home.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency style dining chairs originate from early 19th-century Britain, taking inspiration from ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian forms. They are known for classical symmetry, carved crest rails, scrolled splats, and turned or sabre legs.

Cabinetmakers primarily used dense hardwoods such as rosewood and mahogany, often accented with brass inlay or cane work. Frames were joined using traditional mortise and tenon joinery for structural durability.

Authentic pieces display distinct hand-saw marks on non-visible surfaces, original timber shrinkage around joinery, and a rich dark figure with subtle reddish-brown tone. They also feature hand-carved decorative details rather than modern machine moulding.

Regency chairs can be paired with a clean-lined contemporary dining table to create visual contrast. Their refined silhouette also complements minimalist dining rooms when upholstered in neutral or muted textured fabrics.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent cracking and fading. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood and preserve the natural patination.
