Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian 4-height chest of drawers typically features four distinct horizontal tiers of storage, commonly arranged as two smaller short drawers at the top followed by three full-width long drawers. Mid-to-late 19th-century examples often incorporate turned timber handles, boxwood or brass inlay detailing, and hand-cut dovetail joints set upon a solid plinth or bracket feet.

During the 1860s, cabinet makers utilised solid timber frames combined with rich veneers such as flame mahogany or walnut over secondary woods like pine or oak. Drawers were fitted using hand-cut dovetail joinery, solid drawer bottoms with running strips, and fitted brass locks with decorative keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces exhibit uneven hand-turned knobs, hand-sawn drawer linings, and irregular dovetail joint spacings indicative of pre-industrial craft. Look for natural oxidation on secondary timber backs and drawer bottoms, alongside historic wear around keyholes and lower edges.

A dark wood Victorian chest provides visual weight and historical grounding when placed against modern neutral paint schemes or textured wallpaper. Styling the top surface with ceramic lamps, contemporary artwork, or minimalist glass accessories balances traditional woodwork with modern design sensibilities.

Dust surfaces regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth, following the natural grain of the wood. Preserve the original wax finish by applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding modern aerosol sprays or solvents that degrade historic inlay and shellac polish.
