Equestrian portraiture is a genre of fine art dedicated to depicting horses, which gained immense popularity in Britain during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as owners sought to record prized racehorses, hunters, and livestock.

Paintings from this era were traditionally executed using oil pigments applied onto stretched linen or cotton canvas, mounted on wooden stretcher frames, and often finished with a clear protective varnish.

Authentic period works display characteristic signs of age such as natural surface craquelure, uniform darkening or yellowing of the original varnish, and natural oxidation on the reverse side of the canvas.

Position the painting as a focal point above a mantelpiece, sideboard, or desk, contrasting its traditional subject matter against neutral wall tones and contemporary architectural lines.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources, dusting the frame and surface gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush without applying water or chemical solvents.
