18TH CENTURY GRAND TOUR LANDSCAPE - CIRCLE OF JACOB PHILIPP HACKERT (1737-1807)
Diminutive and charming late 18th century Grand Tour landscape from the circle of Jacob Philipp Hackert
This highly detailed and atmospheric work is very much in the tradition of late 18th century Grand Tour landscapes. Painted in the oval the crisp clear rolling and cultivated foreground is populated with liliputian staffage figures and their grazing sheep.
This bucolic scene extends backwards towards a blue tinged mountain silhouette (possibly Vesuvius) beyond. The foliage of the trees encircling it, is carefully observed and highly decorative and the luminous sky and silvery water help to exude a feeling of calm.
This kind of composition, with its framed trees, distant volcano, and tranquil figures was a popular subject matter for souvenir paintings for the enlightened to bring back from their Grand Tour.
This fine work has been recently cleaned and is an excellent state of conservatio
...n. It is housed in its original frame with sanded gilt slip with has been sympathetically refinished.
