Original Antique Georgian Mahogany Small Chest Bank of 4 Drawers Restored Locking C1780

18th century
Description

Antique Georgian Small Mahogany Chest of 4 Drawers on bracket feet

An exceptional condition original diminutive Georgian chest of drawers.

This George III period solid mahogany chest of drawers , dating to circa 1780 , is a refined example of 18th-century cabinetry. At just 855mm wide and 525mm deep , its compact proportions make it ideal for the modern interior, fitting perfectly into an alcove or between a chimney breast and a wall. A particularly thoughtful design feature is the rear overhang of the top, which allows the chest to sit flush against the wall even in rooms with large, traditional skirting boards.

The chest is elevated by its original and lovely shaped bracket feet , providing a sturdy yet elegant stance. The solid mahogany possesses a lovely rich colour and has been fully re-polished and waxed in-house at Lincoln Restorations . This finish has been expertly applied to revive the deep glow of the timber while carefully preserving the original patina , age, and character of the wood.

The facade is fitted with its original solid brass dropper handles , which is unusual as these are typically replaced over the years. These sit alongside the original keyhole escutcheons and original warded locks . Notably, the piece is supplied with an original warded key which remains in perfect working order and operates the locks on all four drawers. The attention to detail is evident upon opening the drawers, which are fully oak-lined , remain particularly clean inside , and feature very fine dovetailed joints . All of the original cock-beading is present, providing a crisp frame to the drawer fronts.

To ensure the piece is as functional as it is handsome , we have rebuilt the drawer runners where necessary in our workshop, ensuring they run smoothly and effortlessly. Now in home-ready condition , this chest combines the historical integrity of the Georgian era with the practical reliability required for everyday use.

Please note; This item is in fantastic condition for its age as shown by the photographs below. Being an antique item of this age there are obviously marks, scratches and dents, however, we feel that these points are which adds to its charm and character to a piece.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian chests of drawers, produced between 1714 and 1830, are defined by classical proportions, dark timber construction, and functional elegance. Typically crafted from mahogany or walnut, they feature hand-cut dovetail joints, brass hardware, and bracket or ogee feet.

Eighteenth-century furniture makers primarily used solid mahogany and mahogany veneers due to the timbers durability and rich grain. Secondary woods like pine or oak were utilised for drawer linings and back panels, while handles and escutcheons were cast from solid brass.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-sawn dovetail joints on drawer linings, uneven structural wear consistent with age, and original brass fittings or signs of historic handle replacement. The drawer bottoms typically feature wood grain running across the width rather than front to back.

A Georgian chest works as a versatile focal point in contemporary halls, living spaces, or bedrooms. Pairing dark mahogany woodwork with neutral wall tones and contemporary artwork creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Maintain mahogany by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year along the wood grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement and finish fading.
