Mid 18th Century Mahogany Bureau of Good Colour and Figure

18th century
Description

A good mid 18th century Cuban mahogany bureau, of pleasing proportions and rich colour, dating to the George II / early George III period, circa 1750.

The fall front opens to reveal a well-fitted interior of small drawers and pigeonholes, above a green baize-lined writing surface. The arrangement provides practical storage while retaining the charm and functionality expected of the period.

Below are four long graduated drawers, retaining their brass handles and escutcheons, and standing on ogee bracket feet.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A mid-18th-century Georgian bureau is a slant-front writing desk designed during the reign of King George II or George III. It combines a sloping flap that lowers to form a writing surface with a chest of drawers beneath for practical storage.

These bureaux were predominantly constructed from dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its stability and rich grain figure. Secondary timbers like oak or pine were typically used for drawer linings, complemented by cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed drawer bottoms, and natural shrinkage marks consistent with timber age. Checking for original brass handles, period lock mechanisms, and uneven oxidation on the rear pine boards helps confirm age.

An antique bureau functions as a stylish compact home workspace or hall focal point. Pairing dark mahogany timber with contemporary desk lamps, minimalist artwork, or light wall paint creates an appealing contrast between period features and modern aesthetics.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber. Position the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage, movement, or fading.
