Set of Twelve Highly Decorative Late 18th Century Naively Painted Pine Panels Depicting St Michael

18th century
Description

A set of twelve highly decorative late 18th century (circa 1780) naively painted pine panels depicting St Michael the Archangel slaying the dragon or possibly St George, probably originally from a screen.

Each of the panels depicting St Michael slaying the dragon, each having a red and blue painted design framing the main image with four of the panels depicting an armorial behind the figure of St Michael.

The panels have been framed with a rounded dull blue moulded edge to match the parting bead and also to tone with the colours of the panels and to enable them to be easily hung onto a wall.

The panels are quite difficult to date as this type of construction spanned over many years from 1750-1820. Although the panels seem to be of English construction, the style of painting appears to be more that of Asian or Russian due to how the faces of the figures are depicted.

This set of panels are in good condition for age with some evidence of wear which can be viewed on the images, they are of stable construction and can go straight into a home.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Naively painted panels from the late 18th century are devotional folk art pieces created by local provincial craftsmen, characteristically featuring stylized depictions of saints and biblical narratives.

These panels were typically constructed from regional softwoods like pine or hardwoods like oak, coated with a gesso ground, and decorated with natural mineral pigments in tempera or oil mediums.

Authentic period panels exhibit natural age-related craquelure, natural paint flake loss, surface oxidisation, hand-planed timber backs, and construction techniques consistent with pre-industrial woodwork.

These graphic decorative panels function effectively as focal wall art mounted above a console table, arranged in a gallery hallway, or displayed in series within a contemporary living space.

Maintain stable humidity to prevent timber movement, dust gently with a soft dry brush, keep out of direct sunlight to protect pigments, and avoid liquid chemical solvents on delicate historic paint layers.
