Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III secretaire bookcase is a piece of British case furniture produced during the reign of King George III (17601820). It combines an upper glazed cabinet for storing books, a pull-out or drop-front writing desk (secretaire) with fitted interior drawers, and a lower cabinet or chest section.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid timber and veneers such as Cuban or West Indian mahogany, with interior drawers lined in oak or pine. Writing surfaces frequently incorporated gilded leather or baize, while cabinet doors featured handmade glass panels secured by timber astragal glazing bars.

Authentic Georgian secretaire bookcases feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, oak secondary timbers, original brass drop handles, and hand-blown glass with subtle imperfections or bubbles. The secretaire drawer mechanism typically uses side runners or metal support arms consistent with late 18th-century cabinetmaking.

In modern interiors, a secretaire bookcase serves as a focal point in a formal dining room, home office, or living space. Styling the upper glazed shelves with curated ceramics, art books, and minimal decorative objects balances the dark timber with lighter modern aesthetics.

Maintain mahogany surfaces by dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the wood grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, veneer lifting, and uneven fading of the finish.
