Pre-columbian Ceramic Frog Whistle, Chimú Tradition Peru C. 1100–1470

15th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A ceramic frog whistle, probably Peru, in the Chimú tradition. A zoomorphic wind instrument combining sculptural form with acoustic function. Comparable examples are represented in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum. Although many pottery instruments from pre-Conquest South America survive, their exact use remains uncertain. They are generally understood to have served both ceremonial and informal purposes, with fingerholes allowing variation of pitch and sounds that may reflect the represented animal.

The figure is hollow and pierced with multiple openings. The dark surface corresponds to reduction-fired blackware typical of the Andean region and Chimú ceramic practice.

The frog is associated in Andean culture with water, rainfall, and fertility.

Objects of this kind form part of the cultural heritage of pre-Columbian South America and occupy a distinct position where sculpture and function intersect. Surviving ceramic whistles are less common than static figures.

This piece stands apart as a functional object in which sound, form, and meaning are inseparable, offering a direct connection to the sensory world of ancient South America.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chimu ceramics originated along the northern coast of Peru between 1100 and 1470 AD. They are predominantly characterised by dark grey or black fired earthenware, often press-moulded and burnished, featuring zoomorphic shapes, marine motifs, and functional whistle mechanisms.

These instruments were typically formed using two-part clay moulds or hand-modelling techniques from local earthenware clays. An internal chamber and air channel were incorporated into the design prior to firing in low-oxygen kilns to achieve dark, metallic surface tones.

Authentic pieces exhibit characteristic signs of age including surface wear, mineral encrustation, irregular firing marks, and hand-burnished patination consistent with archaeological burial conditions rather than modern uniform chemical distressing.

Sculptural antiquities function effectively as focal points on minimalistic shelving, within glazed display cabinets, or atop stacked art books, providing textural contrast against smooth modern surfaces and neutral colour palettes.

Low-fired earthenware must be kept dry and maintained in stable humidity conditions. Cleaning should be restricted to light dusting with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleansers or water which can degrade fragile surface slips.
