Antique Turkish Milas Melas Prayer Rug.circa 1860. 162cm X 120cm.

19th century
Description

West anatolia,mid 19th century.

Harder to find and getting scarcer these type of 19th century prayer rugs.

This example benefits from a pale honey coloured main border of arrow heads and large flower heads.

Classic melas styling from the mid 19th century.

Ends and sides secure. Even low pile throughout. Wool pile and wool foundations with terracotta coloured weft threads.

Look great hung from walls like flemish tapestries which is the only way I think to properly appreciate these prayer rugs.

Size is 5 foot 4 inches by 3 foot 11 inches. 162cm X 120cm. At widest points. Fringes not measured in size.

My price not 5k,4k but £1950 gbp.

Now selling competitively priced rugs & carpets by comparison.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Milas rugs originate from Southwestern Anatolia and are distinguished by their geometric architectural archways, known as mihrabs, and broad decorative borders featuring stylized floral motifs and warm earth tones.

Nineteenth-century Anatolian rugs were woven using hand-spun sheeps wool for both the pile and foundation, coloured with vegetable and mineral dyes derived from local plants, roots, and insects.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-knotted wool construction, slight asymmetrical irregularities in pattern, natural dye oxidisation over time, and a central mihrab niche designed for devotional use.

Small-format prayer rugs function effectively anchored beneath entry tables, layered over neutral natural-fibre floor coverings, or mounted directly onto walls as decorative textile art.

Preserve historical textiles by vacuuming gently without a rotating brush bar, rotating the rug periodically to ensure even wear, and utilizing professional hand-washing specialists for deep cleaning.
